Research shows that students are more likely to graduate college if they have career direction before they start. The Boys & Girls Club of Dane County has partnered with the Madison Metropolitan School District to make that college success a reality for Madison teenagers through the AVID/TOPS program. Since many of the students would be the first in their families to earn a bachelor’s degree, they often have not received much exposure to careers requiring higher education. Through the AVID/TOPS program teens are not only assisted in fulfilling their goals of completing college, but also in developing stronger and more successful futures.
One way in which the students can learn about career possibilities and explore personal interests is by participating in meaningful professional experiences through the student internship program. Through partnerships with community businesses and organizations, the Boys and Girls Club of Dane County will introduce students 16 and over to a variety of professions in hopes of exposing them to a wider range of career options. By developing a professional interest prior to beginning college and throughout college attendance, the Boys and Girls Club hopes students will have more guidance during college and more motivation to graduate and reach their goal career.
